Circular Product Footprint of a Philips refurbished MRI scanner

Within a world in which valuable resources are harder to come by, ecosystems are under pressure and the world population is increasing, ‘closing the loop’ of products become increasingly more important. Through refurbished imaging systems Philips provides reliable imaging systems at an attractive price, so hospitals can afford up-to-date technology and provide a wider variety of high-quality services to patients, while supporting profitability.

“The circular economy framework is an integral part of our refurbished systems program which has the focus to extend material value as long as possible, while providing reliable imaging systems at an attractive price” comments Eelco Smit, CSR Director Philips.

Philips is continuously looking for ways to further improve its circular economy program and the key performance indicators that are used to measure the impact and progress of the program. Philips is excited to partner up with the NDI (National Sustainability Institute) to measure the Circular Product Footprint (CPF) of a refurbished MRI-scanner. Through the CPF Philips aims to get a better insight into the circular performance of its refurbished systems business and identify further opportunities for improvement of its Circular Economy program.
the CPF method is part of the GSES System developed by the National Sustainability Institute & SGS. In order to measure products from different sectors on circularity, NDI and SGS have developed a generic method that can be used worldwide. The CPF method is available for all companies from September 2018. Through the CPF, end users can see exactly how circular their product or raw material is by scanning a QR code on the product. The QR code is linked directly to the international database in which all information about the product’s the production process, raw materials, circular business model and waste processing method can be viewed. The CPF is generic, workable, scalable, and based on existing standards as Cradle to Cradle and Ellen Mac Arthur foundation.

The Circular Product Footprint is an extension of the GSES System. The GSES platform went live last Monday. Organizations can submit their assessments and request validation and certification on this overarching and open source platform. The CPF calculation module is integrated into the platform and is in direct connection with the Global Sustainable Database in which the calculated and validated products are placed.
