NDI launch SUSTAINABILITY CODEX on Blockchain technology

The Sustainability Codex is based on Blockchain technology to secure the safety of the platform, to secure transparency and and is an open database free available for every organisation, consumer and governmental organisation in the world. The Codex connects companies that want to make sustainable purchases to sustainable suppliers of products.

How does it work? The organizations that already have certifications and labels related to sustainability are in the Sustainability Codex. The Codex gives a score on 4 main themes of sustainability within the organization: CSR, SRP, CO2, Circular Economy. Because all labels and certifications included in the meta standard, require third party assessment verification the sustainability codex is validated on standard level based on the best international guidelines and standards.

Sustainability Codex for buyers & consumers

The Sustainability Codex helps you with sustainable purchasing. The Codex values the sustainable performances and processes of suppliers on 4 core themes of sustainability: CSR, SRP, CO2 reduction & Circular Economy. The Sustainability Codex Platform unlocks this information in an online database. Clear, comparableand reliable, because the Codex measures at standard level, which means that on the basis of the achieved certifications of an organization the Codex gives an overall score on the 4 themes mentioned above.

Sustainability Codex for suppliers

Customers attach increasing value to the sustainable value of an organization or product. The sustainability Codex is the digital register where companies (suppliers) make their sustainable performance visible to customers (buyers and consumers). The Sustainability Codex promotes chain transparency. And makes Sustainable Performance of your suppliers transparent and understandable. The Sustainability Codex does not prescribe any measures that organizations must implement, but is a validation at standard level

Circular Economy mindshift thru the SUSTAINABILITY CODEX

The CODEX and it’s online platform gives every organisation on the planet the opportunity to stimulate sustainability thru business and to support a circular economy. “We need global sustainability data to get insights we need to change the value of products and to create a new frame of reference of sustainable living, working and consuming.” comments Kelly Ruigrok of the NDI. “That is exactly the function of the SUSTAINABILITY CODEX. It is the first free accessible global database in the world on sustainability data.”

Blockchain & Sustainability

Distributed ledger technology which is Blockchain, truly is a mechanism to bring every organisation to the highest degree of accountability. The most critical area where Blockchain helps on the subject sustainability is to guarantee the validity of a transaction by recording it not only on a main register but a connected distributed system of registers, all of which are connected through a secure validation mechanism. Decentralized networks will be the next huge wave in technology and NDI is using it right now to achieve global sustainable goals.

NDI

The National Sustainability Institute of the Netherlands (NDI) took the initiative for the SUSTAINABILITY CODEX. The National Sustainability Institute of the Netherlands was founded in 2017 and is a independent private company that is not driven by government subsidies. The NDI created a generic and overarching toolbox to measure, track and trace and value circular organisations and products. The toolbox consists of 3 main tools: The GSES system, the Global Sustainable Metastandard & the Sustainability – JADE – Codex. The tools NDI developed were in co-creation with Royal Haskoning DHV, SGS Search & Capgemini and various experts on CSR, Circular Economy, SRP, CO2 emissions. All tools the NDI created are based on the best international guidelines and standards on sustainability like GRI and ISO.

The NDI use Blockchain technology for several importent reasons:

  1. File storage, Decentralizing file storage on the internet brings clear benefits. Distributing data throughout the network protects files from getting hacked or lost.
  2. Governance: By making the results fully transparent and publicly accessible, distributed database technology could bring full transparency to elections or any other kind of poll taking. Ethereum-based smart contracts help to automate the process.
  3. Supply Chain auditing: Consumers increasingly want to know that the ethical claims companies make about their products are real. Distributed ledgers provide an easy way to certify that the backstories of the things we buy are genuine. Transparency comes with blockchain-based timestamping of a date and location — on ethical diamonds, for instance — that corresponds to a product number.
  4. Internet of Things (IoT): What is the IoT? The network-controlled management of certain types of electronic devices — for instance, the monitoring of air temperature in a storage facility. Smart contracts make the automation of remote systems management possible. A combination of software, sensors, and the network facilitates an exchange of data between objects and mechanisms. The result increases system efficiency and improves cost monitoring. NDI is researching possibilities to connect relevant existing management systems to the existing tools of the NDI to increase sustainable awareness thru every part of the organisation and to create a economy based on sustainable and circular value of products.

Blockchain technology

The blockchain is an incorruptible digital ledger of economic transactions that can be programmed to record not just financial transactions but virtually everything of value. Information held on a blockchain exists as a shared — and continually reconciled — database. This is a way of using the network that has obvious benefits. The blockchain database isn’t stored in any single location, meaning the records it keeps are truly public and easily verifiable. No centralized version of this information exists for a hacker to corrupt. Hosted by millions of computers simultaneously, its data is accessible to anyone on the internet.
