THE GSES system

Environmental footprint

The Environmental Footprint (EF) is part of the GSES Sustainable Product Footprint certification. The EF is based on existing life cycle assessment (LCA) standards: ISO14040, ISO14044, PEF, ISO14025 and EN15804.

The following LCA indicators (Cradle to Gate) are measured and registered in GSES’ EF:

  • Global warming potential (kg CO2);
  • Freshwater use (l fresh water);
  • Acidification Potential (mol H+ eq)
  • Energy, primary, non-renewable use (MJ)
EF pillar indicator Scoring indicators EF (0% - 100%)
Global Warming Potential (GWP in kg CO2eq) Cradle to Gate per kg product
0%, 10%, 25%

Building products without an LCA/EPD:
0%, 5%, 15%
High = 0% for GWP > 0,5 CO2eq/kg
Medium = 10% for 0 < GWP <0,5 CO2eq/kg
Low = 25% for GWP < 0 CO2eq/kg
Acidification Potential (ADP in mol H+ eq) Cradle to Gate per kg product
0%, 10%, 25%

Building products without an LCA/EPD:
0%, 5%, 15%
High = 0% for AD > Om05 mol H+ eq/kg
Medium = 5% for 0,01 < AD < 0,05 mol H+ eq/kg
Low = 15% for AD < 0,01 mol H+ eq / kg
Energy, primary, non-renewable (PENRT in MJ) Cradle to Gate per kg product
0%, 10%, 25%

Building products without an LCA/EPD:
0%, 5%, 15%
High = 0% for PENRT > 100 MJ/kg
Medium = 10% for 5 < PENRT < 100 MJ/kg
Low = 25% for PENRT < 5 MJ / kg
Fresh water use (FW in I*) Cradle to Gate per kg product
0%, 10%, 25%

Building products without an LCA/EPD:
0%, 5%, 15%
High = 0% for FW > 100 l/kg
Medium = 5% for 5 < FW < 1001/kg
Low = 15% for FW < 51/kg
